SUMMARY
This was one of the most memorable and unique projects we’ve had the pleasure of working on, with an idea that evolved over 4 years in the making. Our clients contacted us back in 2019, a year after they lost their home to the Woolsey fire, while they were amidst the challenging task of planning and rebuilding their home from the ground up and replacing everything they had lost. They dreamed of owning a slab dining table, and with the home’s new layout they would have an opportunity to design something unique to the space. They wanted to have a piece large enough that could host their large family, with the opportunity to add more seating for even larger gatherings. Since live edge slabs are not generally accepted as an ideal material for extension tables, we came up with a different concept that used one incredibly long, large slab split into 3 tables, in which one large table is used as the main dining table, and 2 offcuts from the ends are used in other areas of the home and pulled up to the main table for larger events. We worked very carefully to select the sections so that when pushed together, the live edges line up seamlessly, and the combination of the 3 tables allow the table to function for seating up to 20 people. 3 ‘Mini-Northstar’ pedestals were chosen by the clients to use for the bases, maximizing the available leg room under the table.
The slab we found was very special. At 216” long, it allowed us just enough material for the main dining table at 120”L which was cut from the center-most portion of the tree, leaving (2) 4-foot offcuts for the smaller tables. It was one of the most unique slabs we’ve ever worked with ~ a world record-breaking slab salvaged by Hunski Hardwoods, named the largest straight-cut claro walnut slab in the world. You can read about it’s history in the following link: HUNSKI HARDWOODS. As a bonus, the wood had incredible character and was one of the most figured slabs we have ever worked with, almost entirely “clear” with few-to-no knots or inclusions.
